Farewell to a longtime neighborhood vet.

Got this email the other day:

Dr. Stanley Weissman of the Washington Heights Animal Hospital Has passed away.

Dr. Weissman was born on October 15, 1931 and passed away on Tuesday, November 10, 2009.

Dr. Weissman was last known to be living in Eastchester, New York.

He served the in the US Army in the Vet Corp.

He is survived by his wife Lila.

Service and burial in Bennington, Vermont. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday Nov. 29, 2009 at 1:00pm at the 92nd Street Y, 1395 Lexington Ave., NY, NY.

The family would appreciate donations, if you wish, to the Cornell School of Veterinary Medicine in Ithaca, NY, The Sierra Club, 85 2nd Avenue, Second Floor, San Francisco, CA 94109 or The Israel Congregation of Manchester, P.O. Box 1050 Manchester Center, Vermont 05255.

I never got to meet Dr. Weissman, but Yolanda has mentioned him many times--he was the vet her family took both of their dogs (Bruce and Brucetta), from 1964 to 1985. We know people who have taken pets to him quite recently. He could have retired years ago, but just kept right on serving the community.

Those who would like to read more, and perhaps leave an online tribute to Dr. Weissman, can do so here.

Photos upcoming--been getting over the flu and its aftermath.
